LINK Project Proposal
My LINK internship will be with Katzin Music, a local music store that sells and repairs instruments and provides lessons using a wide variety of instruments. Katzin is very involved with musicians in and out of Durango, so all of what they do is anything music related. They work with studio recorders, connect musicians with other musicians, and even teach vocals. They contribute to the community by giving lessons to all ages and are amazing supporters for music education.
The mentor I will be working with is Jim Gillaspy, the manager of Katzin Music. He is the communicator that works with musicians and musical groups, as well as the repairer for electronic and acoustic instruments alike. We discussed some ideas of what I could learn while I’m interning there, like understanding the workings of acoustics and the basis of composing music.
The reason I chose to intern with Katzin is because I have a deep passion for music and my mentor, Jim, knows a great deal about all there is to know about music. I hope that what I’ll gain out of this internship will be very useful to what I want to do in the future. There is a lot for me to learn about music, which is exactly what I want and need. I think Katzin is the perfect place for me to intern because it’s a music business. So if music is what I want to create after school is all done, then it’s important that I understand what it is like to work in that kind of environment.
I don’t have my project set in stone just yet, it’s just been some ideas we've exchanged about what it could be. It will get rolling once I actually start interning there, but there isn't a project idea that we've been able to decide will benefit the organization and myself. It is a difficult process because my internship was only recently confirmed.
I know that once we decide upon a project eventually, whatever it is, I’ll probably spend most of my work time on it on the site of my internship. Of course there will be time dedicated to working on it at home, so that it will be ready to present at the exhibition. And if there are any questions or difficulties during this time, I’ll be sure to contact Libby to make sure everything works out.
In the period leading up to LINK, there have been a lot of obstacles, mainly with schoolwork and trying to make time to get ready for the internship. It’s been a hard thing to deal with because of my contributing procrastination, but also just trying to keep up with many tasks that must be done. I’ve learned from this that it’s much easier to finish something before it has to be done, or else sleepless nights and stress will take over your life.
When I talk about my internship, I’m overly excited. The fact that I’ll get to be around musical instruments is just great. But the fact that I’ll get to be around other musicians and people who just love and appreciate music as much as I do-that’s the best part. I am aware that this internship won’t be all about my enjoyment of music, so I’m definitely excited to experience something that I’ve never done before; working in a music business and helping it thrive. Even just standing behind the counter asking if customers need help sounds awesome. Every aspect of what I’ve learned about Katzin is what spikes my interest in music. I have no doubt that I will have an amazing experience interning with this organization and I look forward to my first day!
