Why I Chose Animas
I've usually had the choice to attend whatever school I wanted, but I never had the choice to leave any of them. As you can imagine, choosing to go to a school that you end up liking alot and then all of a sudden it's time to move and choose a new one, was the last thing I looked forward to. And it happened every summer for years. So when we moved to the Durango area and I was looking up all the high schools, I decided to take a tour of two in town: Durango High School and Animas. DHS was incredibly laid out and very attractive I must say. The big library, tall ceilings, and shiny lockers were going to convince me that going to this school was gonna be great. But then, I went to Animas (when it was still a strip-mall) and I knew that this school was it. I remember the extremely welcoming junior showing me around the school, enthusiastically telling me all about their curriculum, the teachers, and the culture! Oh the culture of Animas is most definitely it's best attribute. Walking around that stripmall and scanning the artwork on the walls, the backpacks laying in the hallways, the open and outgoing staff, and just the feel of the school was so awesome that I wanted to enroll right then and there.
Going to this school was one decision that I know, undoubtedly, was a very right decision. There isn't anything but the challenging academics that makes me want to go back on that choice. Although the academics, for juniors, is extremely stressful, it's exactly what more schools need. This charter school is like that dream school where all students want to achieve excellence because for once, every teacher supports you and genuinely wants you to succeed. Your peers are so determined to get through by doing the best they can and that's all high school students could ask for; an incredible school.
