First Amendment Media Project
The purpose of this project was to demonstrate our understanding of our First Amendment rights. For our video we showed various pieces of unprotected and protected free speech to inform people about what you can and cannot say/express. The different categories of unprotected speech were fighting words, defamation, clear and present danger, and protesting. We wanted to make a clear distinction between the protected and unprotected examples. For the fighting words scene, saying "You won't" is not protected and so it was legal for the victim to shoot the bully because he could have posed a true threat to the other man's life. In the following scene, both men are not using words that could incite violence or threaten the other. Their words in this scene are simply insults and do not constitute as fighting words, therefore their speech is protected. The legality of certain expression can also be determined on whether or not a reasonable person would believe that something could actually be truly dangerous or life-threatening. We demonstrate in our video what kind of expression you can legally and illegally express publicly without punishment.
